Event Description
Emotional-well being determines the emotional state (e.g., pleasant verse unpleasant) we live in most of the time as we experience each day. The combination of what we think and feel define our mental health. When a person is caught in a state of languishing (i.e., Blah) it can be difficult to belief or feel like things can or will get better.

The purpose of this presentation introduce the mental languishing with respect to what it is and what an employee can do to move aware from it. For all employers this is an important topic to consider because at least 50% of their workforce on any give workday is in a state of languishing. Languishing is not mental illness it is a negative mental state that drains an employee's emotional well-being. However, the longer any employee experiences and lives in this emotional state the higher their risk is for mental illness, sick time, STD, LTD, WCB claims, and resignation.

The learner will be given a frame of reference to understand what languishing is and tips for what they can do to start to move away from it and to get on the road of mental fitness. Mental fitness is the intentional actions we do daily that we belief will help create more pleasant emotions and positive thoughts. 

Objectives:

  • Examine what is languishing and its impact on emotional well-being
  • Discover how and why people languish
  • Understand current languishing risk
  • Review actions steps for moving away from languishing

This event is presented by Dr. Bill Howatt, Founder and President of Howatt HR Consulting.

 


Dr. Bill Howatt  is known internationally and is one of Canada’s top experts in mental health issues in the workplace with over 30 years’ experience in mental health, addiction, and human resources consulting. Dr. Bill has published over 40 books such as The Globe Mail Best Seller: Cure for Loneliness and Stop Hiding and Start Living and over 400 articles. He is a regular contributor with Talent Canada, WSPS CEO blog, The Chronicle Herald and The Globe and Mail.

Dr. Bill has created the senate-approved Certificate in Psychological Safe Leader & Certified Management Essentials, Pathway to Coping and Mental Fitness through the University of New Brunswick. Dr. Bill is on CSA OHS Standards Steering Committee and the Chair of CSA Standard Z1008: Management of Substance Related Impairment in the Workplace. Dr. Bill is the former Chief of Research and Development, Workforce Productivity, at Lifeworks. He is also the former Chief of Research, Workforce Productivity, at The Conference Board of Canada. A few examples of his research projects include: a study Canada Pandemic Pulse Check: COVID-19’s Impact on Canadians’ Mental Health with the Mental Health Commission of Canada and Moving to Action: Implementing the Workplace Safety & Prevention Services’ Mental Harm Prevention Roadmap.
