Eight Ideas to Keep Employees Motivated This Summer

Your Facebook feed is flooded with cottages, fishing trips and patios. The number of COVID cases spiked this week and the CEO is on vacation again.

If you’re having trouble keeping employees on task, you’re not alone. Try shaking things up around the office: here are eight ideas to keep your coworkers happy and motivated.

1. Recognize a job well done
If someone’s going the extra mile, crown them “employee of the month,” present them with a VISA gift card or send an all-staff “thank you” email. It’s nice to be recognized and a great motivation for staff.

2. Incentivize the summer
Remember early dismissals in school? Close the office a couple hours early on Fridays or end the workday at a patio for happy hour. Summer can also be a great time to plan a staff retreat or an outdoor event, especially during work hours.

3. Spruce up the office
Get a new plant, bring in a vase of fresh flowers, hang a piece of local art or find a new accent piece for the office.

4. Go outside
Take your staff meeting out of the office or set up a green workspace. With COVID, it’s safer to meet in large groups if you're outside and people will appreciate the change of scenery.

5. Change the schedule
Offering flexible hours, four-day work weeks or work-from-home options can help employees maintain their work-life balance. If your staff have kids at home or concerns about health and safety, this can be a huge incentive. It also helps with safety measures like social distancing.

6. Set a new goal
We’re halfway through 2020: are you on track to meet your company goals? Organize a team meeting to establish a reasonable summertime goal and brainstorm how you can achieve it.

7. Start a summer project
Encourage team-building by finding a project that excites your staff. Go for walks over the lunch hour, plant a garden or organize a donation drive for a local charity.

8. Ask your team what they want
Instead of guessing, sit down and ask your employees what they want to stay motivated. Your coworkers will appreciate it and their answers might surprise you.
