CCHRA becomes CPHR Canada; Designation becomes CPHR

Today important changes to the CHRP designation and the HR industry across Canada are being announced across Canada, in conjunction with our partners within the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations (CCHRA).
The CHRP designation is being changed to CPHR - Chartered Professional in Human Resources, effective immediately.
Upon their departure, the Human Resources Professional Association (HRPA) of Ontario opted to create a three-tiered designation system for their Province. In this three-tiered model, the HRPA defined the CHRP designation as their entry level, administrative HR designation. At that point, the CHRP was in use across most other provinces in the country as the professional level designation. As a result, the rest of Canada was left with the choice to either accept the market confusion caused across Canada through the three-tiered model introduced by HRPA, or make this change to an entirely new designation name.
The eight provincial associations in the CCHRA opted to go forward with one designation – the CPHR - as our standard of quality for a number of reasons: most professional designations have, or are moving towards, a single designation; one designation is consistent with other international partners; and one designation helps us establish and share a strong and cohesive brand, without market confusion. We feel that Chartered Professional in Human Resources makes a strong statement and will be the foundation for a credible, professional designation in Canada in which our members can take pride.
Along with the designation name change, the CCHRA will be renamed CPHR Canada.
These changes align us all across the country, to be stronger together. A full branding and communication campaign with begin over the next year, to help build public awareness around the new designation name. Likewise, new physical certificates will be made available to CHRP members in the coming months.
As a Board of the SAHRP, we feel this is our most effective route to increasing our visibility, positioning our profession as credible, reducing confusion, safeguarding the public interest, and opening more career options for professional members.
With these changes announced today, though, many things are not changing. We have established consistent requirements for obtaining the designation and these are not changing. We have a national Code of Conduct which is not changing. We continue to aggressively pursue self-regulation in Saskatchewan, and that is not changing. We are partnering with Post-Secondary Institutions for accreditation opportunities and these actions are continuing. The mission of the SAHRP is not changing; we remain in place to build awareness and credibility for the profession, create collaborate partnerships, establish standards for the profession, and support professional learning and development.
These are important and exciting times for our profession. We are asking for your patience and understanding as we navigate through the implementation of these changes. Please know that we have the best interests of our members, the public, and the profession at the forefront of our decision-making. We commit to keeping you informed of changes in a clear and timely manner.
To help members understand more about these changes, we will be hosting a series of town hall meetings across the province in the months of November and December. Stay tuned for more information about these upcoming sessions.
I would like to also recognize that many of our members attended the 10th annual SAHRP provincial conference just last week in Regina. Perhaps you attended the conference. It would have seemed ideal to share this information in person with members at that time; but that was simply not possible. As we coordinated decisions and messaging with our counterparts across Canada, we were not at liberty to share this breaking news until now.
